WASHINGTON: The humble .com is set to receive some competition from a new set of unusual web addresses such as .guru and .singles!

Internet users will now be able to register in targeted and specific domains ending in .guru, .bike, .singles, .plumbing and .clothing among others as a US company is offering a wave of new Web addresses.

Donuts Inc will kick off the general availability period for seven new Internet domain names, marking the beginning of a new era for the Internet in which users will have unprecedented choice in how they identify and brand themselves online.

The new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) - the first of hundreds Donuts will launch this year - are .bike, .clothing, .guru, .holdings, .plumbing, .singles, and .ventures, the company said.

Anyone can register names in these gTLDs on a first come, first-served basis from accredited registrars worldwide.

According to the company on February 5, .camera, .equipment, .estate, .gallery, .graphics, .lighting and .photography will be open for registration by anyone interested in an online identity connected to these terms.

"Starting this week, new, relevant and specific Internet naming options will be available on a scale never before seen," Donuts co-founder and CEO Paul Stahura said.

"This is a unique opportunity for businesses, brands, organisations, and individuals to find an online identity that speaks precisely to their products, services and interests," Stahura said.

In addition to this launch, Donuts hit another major milestone when it signed its 105th new gTLD contract with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

"We have ambitious goals as part of our commitment to leading the development and innovation of the new gTLD marketplace," said company co-founder and Executive Vice President Jonathon Nevett.

"Reaching 105 gTLDs under contract is a good landmark, but we won't be satisfied until all of our remaining contracts are completed and all our gTLDs are fully available to the public," said Nevett.

BANGALORE: Indian IT companies' recent strong positive commentary on greater demand from their top customers was underscored earlier this week by more sombre news for in-house technology staff at Bank of America Corp.

Even as the Indian companies gear up for increased business from financial clients, their biggest customers, that the demand is still being driven by a strong cost-cutting effort was reiterated by BAC's news.

The second-largest US bank, widely believed to be one of the largest clients of Bangalore-based Infosys, India's No. 2 software services provider, was reported to be cutting an undisclosed number of technology jobs, prompting some analysts to say Indian IT firms could benefit.

BERLIN: The World Bank's private-sector arm is investing up to 25 million euros ($34.18 million) in two online retailers, Lamoda in Russia and Dafiti in Latin America, the latest fundraising success for German venture capital firm Rocket Internet.

The bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC) will invest up to 15 million euros in Dafiti and up to 10 million in Lamoda, acknowledging the importance of the retail sector for developing economies.

"Internet companies are speeding up modernization of the retail supply chain in developing countries, which promotes consumer spending -- a key component of economic growth," Atul Mehta, an IFC director, said in a statement.

"Their investments in logistics, information technology and marketing are rapidly generating employment, especially for women and young people."

Rocket Internet, the Berlin-based venture capital group behind booming European fashion e-tailer Zalando, has raised hundreds of millions of euros of funding in the last year for a raft of online retailers it has launched across the globe.

While still relatively undeveloped compared with the United States and western Europe, e-commerce is starting to grow rapidly in emerging markets as Internet access improves, helped by the rapid spread of smartphones.

Dafiti, launched in 2011 with a focus on Brazil, is also active in Colombia, Chile and Mexico. Its other investors include Sweden's Kinnevik, Canada's Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, Quadrant Capital Advisors and JP Morgan.

Lamoda, which launched in Russia in 2011 and expanded to Kazakhstan in 2012, said the IFC investment would help it expand its courier service, which allows it to offer next-day delivery of 900 brands of clothing, shoes and accessories to 25 cities.

Its investors include billionaire American industrialist Leonard Blavatnik, Kinnevik, Summit Partners, JP Morgan and German retail group Tengelmann.

World's first multi-coloured 3D printer developed by Stratasys

The 3D printer developed by Stratasys features "triple-jetting" technology that combines droplets of three base materials

WASHINGTON: A US company claims to have developed the world's first multi-material full-colour 3D printer capable of making objects of hard, soft and flexible polymers.

The 3D printer developed by Stratasys features " triple-jetting" technology that combines droplets of three base materials, reducing the need for separate print runs and painting.

This ability to achieve the characteristics of an assembled part without assembly or painting is a significant time-saver, the company said.
It helps product manufacturers validate designs and make good decisions earlier before committing to manufacturing, and bring products to market faster, it said.

"I believe our new Objet500 Connex3 Color Multi-material 3D Printer will transform the way our customers design, engineer and manufacture new products," said Stratasys CEO David Reis.

Engineers at beta user Trek Bicycle in Waterloo, Wisconsin are using the 3D Printer for assessment and testing of accessories like bik ..

"Now we produce bicycle parts that look and feel like production parts. We are particularly excited about 3D printing our models directly in colour," said Mike Zeigle, manager of Trek's prototype development group.

Similar to a 2D inkjet printer, three colour materials - VeroCyan, VeroMagenta and VeroYellow - are combined to produce hundreds of vivid colours, the company said.

These colour materials join a range of PolyJet photopolymer materials including digital materials, rigid, rubber-like, transparent, and high temperature materials to simulate standard and high temperature engineering plastics.

The 3D Printer also features six palettes for new rubber-like Tango colours, ranging from opaque to transparent colours in various shore values to address markets such as automotive, consumer and sporting goods and fashion. ..

US, UK spy agencies tap data from smartphone apps: Report

NEW YORK: Every time smartphone users fire up apps like Angry Birds and Google MapsUS and British spy agencies extract huge amounts of personal data, according to documents leaked by former NSA contractorEdward Snowden

In their globe-spanning surveillance for terrorism suspects and other targets, the US National Security Agency and its British counterpart GCHQ have been trying to exploit mobile phone technology, a report in The New York Times said.

When a smartphone owner opens Angry Birds, the popular game, and starts slinging birds at chortling green pigs, spies could be lurking in the background to snatch intimate details like a user's "political alignment" and sexual orientation, the report said.

The NSA and Britain's Government Communications Headquarters were working together on how to collect and store data from dozens of smartphone apps by 2007, the report said, citing documents provided by Snowden to The New York Times, The Guardian and ProPublica.

Since then, the agencies have traded recipes for grabbing location and planning data when a target uses Google Maps, and for vacuuming up address books, buddy lists, telephone logs and the geographic data embedded in photographs when someone sends a post to the mobile versions of Facebook, Flickr, LinkedIn, Twitter and other Internet services, it said.

The trawling done by the spy agencies scoops up location, age, sex and other personal information of the users.

The eavesdroppers' pursuit of mobile networks has been outlined in earlier reports, but the secret documents offer more details of their ambitions for smartphones and the apps that run on them.

The efforts were part of an initiative called "the mobile surge," according to a 2011 British document, an analogy to the troop surges in Iraq and Afghanistan.

An NSA analyst's enthusiasm was evident in the breathless title -- "Golden Nugget!" -- given to a slide for a top-secret talk in 2010 that described iPhones and Android phones as rich resources, the report said.

The scale and the specifics of the data haul are not clear, it said.

The agencies have the ability to tap both old and new apps like Angry Birds, the documents show, but they do not make explicit whether the spies have put that into practice.

President Barack Obama announced new restrictions this month to better protect the privacy of ordinary Americans and foreigners from government surveillance, including limits on how the NSA can view the metadata of Americans' phone calls.

However, he did not address the information that the intelligence agencies get from leaky apps and other smartphone functions.
